The Boston Massachusetts Temple is one of a series of detailed pencil drawings and paintings created by the artist Chad S. Hawkins. In 1989, at the age of seventeen, Chad started this unique temple series, becoming the original LDS artist to involve hidden spiritual images in his artwork. Before drawing each temple, Chad researches its history, construction, and beautiful surroundings. He then returns to his studio to draw the temple by referring to his notes, sketches, and photographs. The temple, with its facade of Italian Olympia white granite from Italy, stands in stunning contrast to the verdant green landscape surrounding it. Legal disputes with a coalition of several neighbors resulted in a reduced temple size and it being dedicated without a spire. At the time of its dedication the Church was in the process of appealing the ruling. Prior to the dedication, President Hinckley commented on the situation, It's time we had a temple in Boston. We are so glad it's here. We wish the steeple were on it. I regret that it isn't. But we can get along without it while awaiting the outcome of the legal action. In the meantime we'll go forward performing the ordinance work of this sacred house. (Church News, Boston temple dedicated as 100th edifice, Shaun D. Stahle, 7 October 2000, p.4) As with all of my temple works of art, comments the artist, I include in addition to the temple, appropriate hidden spiritual images within each drawing. With the Boston Massachusetts Temple, I have included the Savior among the trees and foliage in the motion of inviting us to receive the blessings found in temple service. He is positioned overlooking the temple's celestial room. This comes in an 11x14 print.
